I have been a student of Dennis for the past three months while he has been teaching Philosophy 4185, Philosophical Perspectives on justice. I have attended more than 30 of his lecture hours, have visited Dennis’ office hours, and know Dennis well enough to be able to testify as to his quality as an educator. In all of my six years of undergraduate study, Dennis stands out as one of the greatest lecturers I have had the pleasure of studying under.
It became obvious from the first day of class that Dennis cares about his students. Being a fourth-year course, Dennis encouraged our class to develop the skills that we will need for graduate school. Dennis created a presentation assignment for students based on one that we might give at conferences, and motivated students to step outside of their comfort zone. He has also given us the opportunity to develop an essay over the course of the semester that can serve as a writing sample for graduate applications. At every moment in this course, he has provided us with valuable feedback that makes us better students. His efforts do not go unnoticed, and we greatly appreciate them.
Another thing that quickly became apparent was Dennis’ great subject matter expertise. We have studied topics ranging from Indigenous sovereignty, to gene manipulation in humans, to agriculture security. Dennis has been able to confidently answer every single question asked in class, and often recommends contemporary readings to students who wish to explore a subject further. The difference in academic knowledge between our class of fourth-year students and Dennis is frankly humbling. It is easy to see that Dennis is incredibly intelligent and knowledgeable.
Finally, the educational experience I have had under Dennis is one of the most fulfilling I have ever had. Three-hour seminars are sometimes difficult to sit through, but Dennis always keeps the class engaging, interesting, and informative. Dennis invents thought experiments for us to ponder and discuss as a group. He guides discussion in unexpected directions and pushes back on our assumptions. He makes everyone feel comfortable and respected. This class has been more informative, memorable, and fun than any other in my undergraduate career and I feel lucky to have had Dennis as my instructor.
It is for all these reasons that I give Dennis Papadopoulos my most outstanding recommendation. I have no doubt that he will one day make an outstanding professor and I am confident that he will be a great addition to your department and university.
